Book Beginnings

April 20, 2012 by pictureperfectcooking

Please join me and other bloggers over at Rose City Reader for today’s Book Beginnings.  Want to join up, too?  It’s so easy…just grab the book you are reading, or have read or want to read, and type the first couple of lines in said book.  Then give us your opinion. That’s all there is too it!

My book beginnings for today is from “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” by J.K. Rowling:

"The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive."

This sentence really doesn’t give us a strong idea of what is going to happen in just a few short pages, but it does kind of give you a feeling that the “drowsy silence” may not last too much longer.  This is a great book and series!!

Yes, I like openers that portray something “normal,” with “drowsy silence”….definitely a kind of foreshadowing.

Thanks for sharing, and here’s MY FRIDAY MEMES POST

I loved the Harry Potter books. I’ll get around to reading them again soon, hopefully. My Friday post:

Actually, I kinda like that opening… it feels atmospheric. Though I read another blog post recently telling writers to NEVER EVER start with the weather. 🙂

Love those Harry Potter books! I can’t wait to see what J.K. Rowling has up her sleeve with her new book!

    Hi Tammi,

Those first lines are definitely interesting, but I am afraid that I am not tempted by this one. I think I must be the only person on the planet who isn’t ‘into’ Harry Potter. We even bought the first couple of films, but I couldn’t finish watching even the first one … just not my kind of thing.

I hope that you enjoy the book however and have a good weekend,

    Yvonne

This is a very good beginning. Relaxed atmosphere but you know it won’t stay like that.

I haven’t read the HP books, but I may get to them some day. I like that kind of traditional beginning.

Thanks for linking your post on Book Beginnings!

I like this opening because I love that drowsy silence that hangs in the air at the end of a hot day. I haven’t read the HP series but I bought multiple copies of each book for my kids who read them numerous times.
