We had a fireworks show to celebrate our anniversary! Stay tuned…story to come later!
Whew, December was busy, busy month for us! C had a work conference that we attended. We had several trips to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, and C & I had one special day that was just for us.
As you can tell from previous posts, I am a HUGE University of Kentucky sports fan! Always have been, always will be. I suppose it comes from growing up in a family of UK fans. It is in my blood! C & I got to attend 2 football games this fall, a first for both of us. It was great fun and I loved every minute of it, but I really, really wanted to go to a basketball game as well. It had been over 15 years since I had been to one, and even then, the atmosphere at the games was incredible! Now, with a new coach and an undefeated season (so far), I knew it would be worth it!
C’s cousin’s wife is a senior at UK, and we asked if she could get us tickets. She did! We went December 23rd and it was sooo much fun!
This photo is of the NCAA championship banners that hang in Rupp Arena. Maybe they can add another one this year!
The Wildcat mascot was all decked out for Christmas.
Fireworks are set off during the player introductions.
The tip-off!
The UK cheerleaders have earned multiple national championships in their own right.
We had a great time and might have to go back just one more time!!! After the game, we rounded out our “party” day by going to the movies to see “Avatar” in 3-D. What an experience! Neither one of us had ever seen a movie in 3-D in a theater. It was breathtaking! The movie itself was good and the 3-D effects just made it that much better.
Last weekend, C & I took a quick trip to Lexington to tour the Christmas light display at the Kentucky Horse Park. We have been to many public displays like this. In fact, our first official date was a drive through lights. This one ranked near the top!
It is called Southern Lights and the Horse Park uses it as a fund-raiser during the off season. We really enjoyed it and wanted to share it with everyone! If you are near Lexington, it is worth the $15 per car price of admission to go through it. Also, for that price, you have access to other attractions in the park, such as a petting zoo and gift shops.
These are just a few of the many light designs displayed. The work that goes into this is amazing!

Until this fall, I had never attended a college football game. There had been hundreds that I had watched on television, but never in person. Now I can say that I have been to 3, count ‘em, 3 football games!
In September, C & I went to watch his alma-mater, Western Kentucky University, play. We had a great time and knew we wanted to see more. A couple of weeks ago the opportunity arose for us to go to Lexington and watch the University of Kentucky Wildcats play! What a treat this was! My whole family are life-long Big Blue fans and we have been to a few basketball games, but this would be the first gridiron appearance for us. C & I got there about 2 hours before the game started and had an opportunity to look around the tailgating areas and the stadium. Believe me, these people are serious about their tailgating!
The university honors the military at a game every year and this was the day for that. Several soldiers from Fort Knox were in the stands to watch the game. Before the game started, 3 jumpers from the Silver Wings Paratrooper group flew down to the field. It was an amazing sight! They have to have nerves of steel to be able to do that. One of them had over 800 jumps!
UK played great and beat University of Louisiana-Monroe 36-13.
We got to go back to see UK play again this past Saturday thanks to my boss. He has season tickets and couldn’t go, so he offered them to me. I jumped on the chance! UK was playing Eastern Kentucky University which is located just a short distance away from Lexington in Richmond. UK won this game, too, with a final score of 37-12. This was a day game and it was a beautiful sunshine filled afternoon.
The cheerleaders kept the fans in the game and both schools’ bands performed at half-time.
These games have been SO much fun! Now, we are ready for basketball tickets!!!

Saturday night C & I attended a college football game at his alma mater, Western Kentucky University against Central Arkansas. The game didn’t go so well with UCA winning 28-7, but we had a blast. It had rained off and on all day, but at game time, the weather was perfect!
The gentleman sitting beside C began talking to us. He was originally from Virginia, had graduated from WKU, and now lived in Florida. This was the first WKU football game he had attended in 50 years. Even though the game didn’t go as well as we would have liked, we had a wonderful time and will definitely go back again!

On Saturday afternoon, we arrive back in Bluegrass land! How about that fence? It’s supposed to keep falling rock from smashing cars on the interstate. Sure hope it works!
We are on our way home when we decide to take a side trip. Sometimes it is easy to forget what is available in your own state. Both C & I had been to Cumberland Falls when we were children, but had never gone back. Since it was just off the interstate a few miles on our way home, we wanted to see it again. It is just as beautiful now as it was then!
It is state park inside of a national forest so the drive is a curvy, tree-lined lane.
I have to confess that when we first parked we didn’t read the sign very close and walked the wrong way to the overlooks. We ended up thinking that we must be in the wrong area and drove around some more. When we looped back around to this area and actually read the sign, we felt a little silly! Oh, well. We had a good laugh out of it. Enjoy the view!
We took a couple of self-portraits in front of the falls.
We hope you enjoyed your virtual trip because we really enjoyed the real thing!

After spending most of Friday in Gatlinburg, we made our way back to Pigeon Forge. This is an interesting place. There are no casinos, but the lights and signs almost remind me of photos of the old Las Vegas. There were music shows, mini golf courses, and go-kart tracks galore.
There is also a building that looks like it landed upside down. It is an “amusement park for your mind”. We didn’t have a chance to visit this, but it looked neat from the outside.
Also being built is a new museum set to open spring of next year. It is a Titanic museum that is going to look like the actual Titanic!
Friday evening we visited a store that was right up my alley. It is the Christmas Place and they have Christmas decorations for sale all year long! I could have spend hours in there just looking around. The people who own this store also have a hotel across the road.
Saturday morning began with a new adventure for C. When he and his family visited here years ago, he had wanted to try indoor skydiving but changed his mind. This time he was determined to give it a go and he did! He really liked it and was an adrenaline high for a while afterward!
We hit the outlet malls for a little while after this. One of my co-workers gave me a tip for a wonderful place to visit and eat. Before we headed back toward Kentucky, we checked it out. Boy, was I glad we did. The Apple Barn is a great place to go! They have 2 restaurants, The Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant and The Applewood Grill. We ate at the Farmhouse and it was delicious! They start everyone’s meal with an order of apple fritters with apple butter and their house “Applewood Julep” which is a combination of apple, orange, pineapple and lemon juices. So refreshing!
C had the angus burger and fries and he said it was very good. I had the applewood grilled pork loin with fried apples, mac & cheese and biscuit. Oh, my goodness! It was some of the best restaurant food that I have EVER had! Loved it!
There are several shops at the Apple Barn complex and we visited the candy store and gift shops. I could have worked in their candy shop. It was darling! We picked up some gifts here and purchased 2 bags of the apple fritter mix at the gift shop.
Now, we’re on the road again! Come back soon!
